Adrian Mangiuca '09, a proud alumnus of Franklin University Switzerland, reflects on his journey from the Italian-speaking Swiss canton of Ticino to the forefront of space policy at NASA. In an engaging interview, Adrian shares the profound impact of his Franklin experience and offers valuable insights for current and future students.

A Unique Educational Experience

Adrian's decision to attend Franklin was driven by a deep belief in the value of travel education. Despite initial skepticism from his family, he was captivated by the idea of studying in a small, diverse, and international community nestled in the Lugano Prealps. Franklin's unique approach to education, which emphasizes experiential learning and global perspectives, proved to be a perfect fit for him.

"Travel education is the best education," Adrian asserts. He recalls the unparalleled freedom he had at Franklin to explore topics he was passionate about, akin to the experience of a self-study program or even a PhD. This freedom, combined with the guidance of exceptional professors, allowed him to delve deeply into international communications and economics.

Memorable Experiences and Influential Mentors

Adrian fondly remembers his time at Franklin, highlighting the invaluable mentorship of Professor Wasiq Khan and Professor Satomi Sugiyama. Their guidance not only enriched his academic experience but also opened doors to unique opportunities. A standout memory for Adrian was a trip to Japan with Professor Sugiyama, an experience that left a lasting impression and broadened his cultural understanding.

One of the pivotal moments in Adrian's academic journey was a cultural immersion trip to the Spiti Valley in India. Living with Tibetan Buddhist monks and teaching English while learning about their culture deeply influenced his perspective on development studies. This experience solidified his interest in development economics, leading him to pursue further studies at University College London.

Launching a Global Career

Franklin's emphasis on real-world application of knowledge and its global network played a crucial role in Adrian's career trajectory. Thanks to connections made through Dr. Khan, Adrian secured a position at a think tank in New Delhi, India. This first professional experience was instrumental in shaping his career path and set the stage for his future achievements.

Adrian's journey continued with roles at the U.S. State Department, where he worked in various capacities including democratization, financial management, and counterterrorism. His diverse experiences eventually led him to the space industry, where he now contributes to policy and strategy at NASA, leveraging his background in communications and economics. As a Program Analyst, Adrian's work impacts the strategic direction of space initiatives.

Advice for Future Students

Reflecting on his journey, Adrian offers valuable advice to current and prospective Franklin students. He emphasizes the importance of pushing boundaries and stepping out of comfort zones. "You think you're out of your comfort zone, but you don't know what that means until you push harder," he advises, urging students to engage deeply with the local community and take advantage of every opportunity to travel and learn.

Adrian also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary learning. He encourages students to explore subjects outside their majors, as this broadens their perspectives and enhances their problem-solving abilities. "You have to speak multiple languages of perception," he says, underscoring the value of diverse academic experiences.

Impact on Generation Z

When asked about the relevance of Franklin's education for today's Gen Z students, Adrian is optimistic. He believes that Franklin's immersive and collaborative approach equips students with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex and divided world. In a time marked by rapid technological advancements and societal challenges, Franklin's emphasis on discourse, dialogue, and global understanding is more crucial than ever.
