The 2024-2025 academic year has officially begun at Franklin University Switzerland, with the annual Convocation Ceremony marking its formal launch. Held on the President’s Lawn at Kaletsch Campus, the event is a cherished tradition that marks the beginning of new journeys for students, faculty, and staff alike. The ceremony featured inspiring welcome addresses from President Samuel Martín-Barbero and Dean of Academic Affairs David Mills, who encouraged the community to embrace the upcoming year with creativity and reflection.

This year’s Convocation Ceremony focused on Franklin's faculty. A highlight of the event was the introduction of two new full-time faculty members: Dr. Heidi Toivonen, who joins Franklin as the Nora McNeely Hurley Assistant Professor of Psychology, and Dr. Vera Dianova, who transitioned from adjunct faculty to full-time Assistant Professor of Economics, in the Academic Division of Business and Economics, after more than four years with the university.

In a conversation led by Dean Mills, both professors shared insights into their professional journeys. Dr. Toivonen, an expert in environmentally oriented narratives, expressed her excitement about joining Franklin’s vibrant community, while humorously acknowledging the challenge of remembering everyone’s names. She emphasized the importance of resilience during challenging times and the need to foster supportive environments where students can thrive. Her research on human behavior and cognition is expected to enrich the academic experience at Franklin.

Dr. Dianova, who has been part of Franklin for several years, spoke passionately about her connection to the university and her field. With extensive experience teaching a range of courses from international financial management to economics, she is eager to continue guiding students through the complexities of the global economy. Both professors also highlighted the importance of open-mindedness, adaptability, and embracing change in today’s evolving world.

In addition to welcoming new faculty, the Convocation Ceremony recognized several professors for their outstanding contributions over the past year. Professor Martino Ongis received the Excellence in Teaching Award for his innovative approach to student learning, despite numerous challenges, including serving as Franklin’s sole psychology professor last year.

Professor Clarice Zdanski was honored with the Excellence in Service Award for her behind-the-scenes contributions to Franklin’s academic leadership and the studio art program. Her leadership and tireless dedication were essential during times of transition.

Professor Giulia Miniero was awarded the Excellence in Professional Engagement Award for her remarkable contributions to research and external partnerships. Her interdisciplinary collaborations and achievements in publishing have created valuable opportunities for both Franklin students and the broader academic community.

Special recognition was also given to Franklin’s adjunct faculty, whose contributions are vital to the university’s success. Professors Martin Bullock, Iona Dawson, Goran Filic, and Rossana Galli were honored for their dedication and expertise across a variety of fields. Each was praised for going above and beyond to create unique and enriching learning experiences for students.

Franklin’s Convocation Ceremony marked the start of a new academic year and celebrated the unwavering dedication of faculty who continue to shape the future of the university.
