This summer, the book "Sustainable Universities and Colleges" was released. The book provides a set of organizational models for the integration of sustainability into colleges and universities and has received acclaim from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education: "Sustainable Universities and Colleges provides both practical and aspirational guidance for the higher education sector to advance sustainability. Emphasizing the important role that higher education plays in addressing the climate crisis and preparing current and future generations to address the complexity of challenges we face, this text encourages higher education institutions to think holistically about sustainability and to engage faculty, staff, and students as advocates" (Meghan Fay Zahniser, AASHE).
Included in this book is a chapter entitled "A student-driven approach to establishing sustainability programs at colleges and universities: lessons from the Green Office Movement in Europe." Authored by the Director of Green Office Sustainability Programs, Jean Wu, the chapter advocates for the increased adoption of the Green Office Model outside of Europe and asserts that student-led sustainability programs better prepare students for careers in sustainability fields than curriculum alone, by providing practical skills for tackling sustainability issues, by encouraging innovations to address real-world challenges, and by cultivating an attitude of change-making and leadership. Wu centers the chapter on the experience of Franklin's Green Office and introduces readers to how the Green Office Model helped to build Franklin's sustainability programs and how FUS students have benefited from a bottom-up approach to building a sustainability program.
