Dear Franklin Community,
This Monday update contains information about traveling to Switzerland, the possibility of small seminars and labs meeting in the classroom, and new measures that we are taking to help keep the community safe.
First, as you may have heard, effective February 8, 2021, anyone traveling to Switzerland from a country or region with a high risk of infection must present valid proof of a negative PCR test result that is less than 72 hours old. Even people flying to Switzerland from countries not on the list of high risk regions must be able to show a negative PCR test in order to board the plane. This is especially important to note for students who are traveling back to campus in February. Our quarantine protocol here at Franklin has not changed, and the details are still available on the Moodle site.
Great news for those in lab classes or small seminars: your professor may decide to hold these particular classes in person in class. Please remember that everyone must wear a mask covering the nose and mouth at all times and maintain social distancing. Check directly with your professors if you have any questions. While most classes remain online per the federal guidelines, we are happy to have this opportunity for safe, socially-distanced work where possible.
We also have been invited to collaborate with a study that may help us with early detection of the COVID-19 virus, and we would like your help! All students and faculty participating in Academic Travel this spring will have the opportunity to participate in a regular series of quick and easy to use “scratch and sniff” tests: the test cards let you check your sense of smell, and potentially may help provide early detection of virus symptoms. Stay tuned for more details and check your email later this week for specific information on how to participate.
Finally, remember that gatherings are limited to five people or fewer. Large parties or gatherings of more than five people are not allowed according to federal guidelines, and anyone in violation of the guidelines will be subject to judicial board sanctions. Beginning today, Monday, February 1, anyone violating epidemic guidelines will be committing an offense and may be immediately fined between 50 and 200 CHF by the Swiss authorities. Examples include not wearing a mask on public transportation, at train stations, outside publicly accessible buildings, or attending a banned event.
Please remember to wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth in all indoor spaces and any outdoor spaces where you cannot ensure social distancing. Practice social distancing, wash your hands often, air out the rooms you frequent, and stay away from group settings. If you are not feeling well or have questions about your health, please contact Chris Schmid at medical services.
