Franklin values a holistic student experience both in and out of the classroom, and your health and wellbeing are important to us. To ensure a positive student life experience, the University offers on-campus health services as well as access to off-campus services in Lugano. We also assist in managing all medical bills for students who are legally insured in Switzerland with our policy through SWICA Health Insurance. This policy offers health advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week in Italian, French, German, and English

On-Campus Health Services

Coordinator of Health and Wellness
The Coordinator of Health and Wellness supports the health of the entire campus community and serves as a liaison between the local healthcare community and our Franklin community. The Coordinator can assist with making appointments and coordinating referrals to specialists when necessary. This may be especially useful if a student encounters difficulty due to a language barrier. She advocates for the well-being of our students by ensuring they have access to resources in the community, but note that coverage by students' insurance providers may vary. The Coordinator can provide basic first aid and can help arrange support services such as transportation in the event of an emergency.

Please note: The Coordinator does not accompany students off-campus to medical appointments or the hospital. All student health information is kept secure and cannot be released to parents or guardians without the student's written consent. A list of English-speaking doctors and dentists is available in the Office of Student Life.

University Counseling
The University Counselor is a licensed clinical psychologist available to meet with students during limited hours each week throughout the academic year. Corbin Moro, Lic. Psic., CHt., ATP, FSP is a qualified, licensed, and certified Swiss registered psychologist and certified hypnotherapist and EMDR therapist. She speaks English, Italian, and French. Franklin University Switzerland offers each student two free counseling sessions with Corbin each semester during her regularly scheduled office hours. The Counselor's office hours are posted in the Office of Student Life and on the FUS website at the beginning of the year. Appointments can also be made with external counselors with referrals to local English, German, or Italian-speaking psychotherapists and psychiatrists.

Health/Accident Insurance

The law in Switzerland regarding health insurance (LAMal) requires that anyone who lives in Switzerland prove that they are enrolled in a Swiss health insurance policy. Franklin has a contract with SWICA, a well-known Swiss health insurance company with very good worldwide coverage, which is important for students while they travel. This policy is available for all students who are not EU or EFTA residents for the duration of their studies at Franklin. The Office of Student Life assists with students' enrollment in this SWICA policy. For additional information, please contact Elena Veri-Sartori in the Office of Student Life..

Students who are EU/EFTA residents are subject to a different process for ensuring their EU insurance coverage satisfies the LAMal requirement. To start the process, students must obtain their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before entering Switzerland. We encourage EU/EFTA residents to visit the KVG/LAMal site for more information.

The Franklin website is in the process of being updated, so in mid-July, please review the information related to students using EHIC while studying in Franklin.

Recreational Sports

Franklin students can take advantage of the natural beauty of the area and participate in numerous outdoor activities and sports throughout the year. A staff member in the Office of Student Life oversees Franklin's Tone Athletic Center and coordinates recreational sport programs for students like ski trips, hiking opportunities, and other activities that connect students with the natural beauty in which we live. For more information, please visit Franklin's Sports and Recreation page or email Aniello De Lucia.

Warning: Mobility by Train

All passenger trains between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland will be diverted via the Alpine Panorama Route until further notice. Although this journey is picturesque, it will take 60 minutes longer for national traffic and 60-120 minutes longer for international traffic. Since double-deck trains cannot operate on this route, there could be fewer seats available (30% fewer seats available on the weekends and slightly reduced capacity on weekdays).

Our community is encouraged to refer to the SBB website for detailed information and plan for longer train journeys when traveling between Ticino and the German-speaking part of Switzerland.
