Join us on Friday, November 8, 2024, as the Global Science Film Festival returns to Franklin!
Hosted by the Division of Arts and Cultures and the Social Justice and Sustainability Program, this year’s festival will bring inspiring cinematic works to our campus, featuring two short films and one full-length film. Now in its 6th edition, the Global Science Film Festival will be celebrated from November 7 to 10 in different Swiss locations, including Lugano, Bern, Basel, and Zurich.
Program
5 pm: Welcome | Nielsen Auditorium, Kaletsch Campus
5:10 pm: Short: Unusual Day (Fiction, 2024, 4 min)
We spend a day with a young woman. But what seems slightly unusual at first is, in fact, her everyday reality.
5:15 pm: Short: The Brick Conspiracy (Animation, 2024, 3 min) p. 26
A Lego family encounters conflicting information about the strength of red vs. white bricks, sparking a debate fueled by social media conspiracies. As doubt spreads, real-life consequences follow.
Once Upon a Time in a Forest is a cinematic ode to a group of young radicals striving to defend Finland’s forests against the vested interests of the forestry industry and the political system, demonstrating that the outcome of this Once Upon a Time story – happily ever after or ecological disaster – rests largely on the shoulders of young activists like Minka, Ida and their comrades.
7:30 pm: Roundtable Discussion
Participants: filmmaker Virpi Suutari, Professors Heidi Toivonen and Christoph Kueffer, and FUS students Casey Campagne and Caitriona McCarthy.
8:15 pm: Festival Reception | Kaletsch Campus Conference Room.
The event is free for the Franklin community. We look forward to welcoming you all!
